The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has released new car sales figures for last month showing that the Ford Fiesta continues its winning streak as the UK’s best-selling car, followed by its slightly bigger stablemate, the Focus. In fact, April was an excellent month for the UK’s auto industry altogether, bringing a 38th consecutive month of growth in new car registrations.
April Sales up 5.1%
According to the SMMT, last month was the best month for new car sales in the last decade, with unit sales passing 185,000. That makes 920,366 new registrations for the year to date, beating last year’s new car sales for the same period by 55,000 units.
The April bonanza comes on top of the busy month of March, when the change to new plates traditionally sees a surge. Diesel models have the edge on petrol cars slightly, and the alternative-fuel sector has done particularly well.
The Fiesta Reigns
Ford’s all-conquering Fiesta was a decisive leader, selling a third more than the second-place Focus. The seventh generation of the supermini, which has been on sale since 1976, has won a slew of awards. It received a smart facelift last year and sold more than 130,000 units in the UK alone. It has been Britain’s best-selling car for five years in a row, and 2015 looks set to make it six. It holds the title of Britain’s best-selling car of all time, with sales of over four million.
